How to Improve Your Home Security on a Budget

Improving your home security does not have to mean an expensive overhaul. A handful of low-cost changes can noticeably reduce the risk of a break-in.

Start with the basics: make sure every external door has a British Standard lock, and that windows on the ground floor have working key locks fitted.

Door and window sensors combined with a simple visible alarm box are one of the most cost-effective deterrents available, as most burglars avoid homes that look protected.

Keep hedges and fences trimmed so entry points are visible from the street, and use timer plugs for lights when the house is empty in the evenings.

Finally, get any weak locks assessed by a locksmith. A free security survey often reveals one or two small changes that make a disproportionately big difference.
