How to Choose the Right Lock for Your Front Door

With so many lock types on the market, choosing the right one for your front door can feel confusing. In practice, a few clear rules make the decision much easier.

Look for locks that carry British Standard BS3621 certification. This is the benchmark most insurers require and reflects genuine resistance to picking, drilling, and forced entry.

Euro cylinder locks are the most common choice on uPVC and composite doors. Make sure yours is an anti-snap version, since standard cylinders are a well-known weak point.

For timber doors, a five-lever mortice deadlock paired with a night latch gives strong, tested protection and is often an insurance requirement.

Whatever you choose, correct fitting matters just as much as the lock itself. A high-security lock fitted incorrectly offers little real protection.
